Which Track Are You On?

This cartoon by Renfo depicts two categories of railroad workers. Each is endeavoring to obtain higher wages, shorter working hours, and safer working conditions. The unorganized railroad worker, represented by the lone worker on the hand cart, is being impeded in his efforts to obtain a better life by the "fat cat" capitalist employer. Organized railroad labor is represented by the powerful train engine that is powered, not by steam, but by the powerful, united labor force of the workers. So powerful is the organized labor force that the employer trembles in its presence. As the train of organized labor moves down the tracks toward prosperity, the engineer beckons unorganized labor to "Get aboard". (The "IPEU" in the lower right-hand corner of the cartoon stands for International Photo Engravers Union. This cartoon was drawn circa 1913.)
